Selena began her music career when she was eight years old. Her father was the founder of a group. The older brothers of Selena's Abraham junior playing base guitar and sister Suzette playing drums, were part of the group. Selena also sang. Selena Y Los Dino was her name for the group and Selena would sing with other siblings in bars, restaurants and at wedding fairs. Selena as well as her siblings and their parents were always busy with the band. They never really had an early childhood. However, Abraham encouraged them to become determined musicians because of his passion. Abraham senior was a member of Los Dinos, the first band. Selena Y Los Dinos were officially established in 1981. It was a family affair as well as the principal source of income for the family. Even though there were times of struggle starting out with very little cash, the Quintanilla family stood firm and persevered in their quest to create a success band. Selena Y Los Dinos would be popular in the west Americas in the 80s. Selena received the award for Female vocalist and performer of the Tejano Music Awards in 1986. From that point on Selena Y Los Dinos were one of the most successful winners every year, and they gained the attention and fame.
